While painting an exterior overhang, a spark was observed within the enclosure of a crane rail extending from the building interior. The electrical contacts are fully enclosed within the housing and these systems are typically de-energized when not in use. Review and investigation of this incident revealed that this particular rail was energized and the housing had a small breach. Exposure to outdoor conditions (rain, sleet, snow, etc.) resulted in corrosion of the crane rail's metal enclosure.
