A Utility Operator was raising the light mast on a portable light plant when the internal clutch mechanism failed to prevent the mast handle from free-willing backwards when released. The free-wheeling handle struck the operator's gloved hand breaking 2 fingers and causing a contusion. The light plant has an automatic clutch to prevent any handle kick back motion when the mast is going up or down. No manually activated locking mechanism is present as is typical in older models.
