Not all devices can be de-energized with off-the-shelf lockout devices, forcing the use of an administrative tagout-only control. Rather than accepting this, a team at the Energy Systems Integration Facility collaborated and came up with an innovative solution to develop lockout devices produced on a 3-D printer. National Renewable Energy Laboratory researchers may now conduct service and maintenance work with confidence, knowing the hazardous energy associated with the equipment is safely managed.
