Construction, of Brookhaven National Laboratory's currently used facilities, spans over 80 years. Over this wide timeframe construction and electrical codes have been evolving. This has created variations in our work environment which must be met and addressed by our workforce. To address these variations the Associate Laboratory Directors for the Facilities and Operations and the Environmental Health and Safety Directorates initiated a focused Mentoring and Coaching (M&C) Program. The M&C Program established an environment where the directorates could provide a consistent message, roll-out new requirements, standardize processes, provide guidance and identify commonalities to address. At the same time the mentors concentrated on providing an additional avenue for worker feedback. At weekly meetings the management team and mentors/coaches discussed and compiled their observations and worker feedback to identify common themes (both positive and opportunities for improvement). Themes were identified through field interactions involving coaching and mentoring of craft, supervisors, and managers who perform and/or plan Lockout/Tagout and electrical work throughout the site.
