While installing filter media at Hanford's 283-W Water Treatment Plant, a worker inhaled Anthracite coal dust causing chest discomfort and coughing. The worker was not wearing respiratory protection, engineered controls were inadequately applied, and excess dust was created by raking the filter media into place. Anthracite is a self-leveling water filter material and raking is not necessary.
