Perform visual inspection of excavation boundaries and surrounding areas when performing utility locates and excavation activities. In many cases, there are above-ground indications of underground services, such as lighting pedestals or pump stations, in which power service should be verified with underground locates services prior to excavating. Being diligently aware of the surroundings of dig sites is necessary to ensure that above-ground indications of underground utilities are traced to locate utilities that may cross into an excavation boundary unexpectedly.
