Several staff members who have been traveling for business or pleasure recently have reported lost or stolen badges, laptops, and keys, including keys that access multiple locations. These losses highlight the need for staff members to evaluate what items are best left behind while on travel or away from the Laboratory. Besides the inconvenience, lost or stolen laptops, badges, and keys cause unnecessary expense for organizations within the Laboratory, and may create security risks. In the case of multi-location keys, the costs to the responsible organization for re-keying multiple locations can be tens of thousands of dollars. Lessons Learned: Ask yourself what items are essential for travel and leave the rest in a secure spot at home or work. If you are a manager, work with your staff to help them identify those items that are high-risk should they be lost or stolen.
