The attached Data Collection Sheet provides information regarding a quality-related Kobe Steel Ltd. issue. Kobe Steel, Ltd., acknowledged in early October that it had falsified quality data for years and sold improperly certified aluminum, copper, iron and steel products to over 500 companies. As of this date, there is no known failure event related to Kobe's products and the extent of usage of the falsely credentialed metals is still unknown. However, its potential use in critical safety and mission-related systems should be evaluated. The attached DCS include a basic Line of Inquiry for your consideration to facilitate tan evaluation by your respective sites. The Office of Environment, Health, Safety, and Security expects there to be additional followup exchanges where Kobe products are found within DOE, and when more information is known.
