Be aware of the potential hazards associated with recycling of lithium ion batteries.

While a technician was attempting to remove batteries from an iPad, one of the batteries began to smoke and caught fire and then self-extinguished after about 30 seconds. It had been assumed that all hazards for performing the work associated with the disassembly of the electronic telecommunication devices were identified in a Craft Specific Hazards Analysis. Although no one was hurt, the fire could have started the work bench on fire leading to a more dangerous situation.
