During battery maintenance on an uninterruptable power supply (UPS) unit in the Information Operations and Research Center. A technician pulled a tray of batteries one-third to one-half of the way out of the UPS cabinet, which is a normal practice. In doing so, the shelf tipped forward causing four 105-pound batteries to fall approximately 4 feet to the floor. The technician was not injured as he followed his training and stepped back and away from the falling batteries. There was visible damage to one of the battery cases; however, the contents of the battery remained intact.
