A laboratory room had previously been used for radiological sampling and analysis but neither the Radiological Control Technicians performing routine annual surveys nor the lab worker in the lab were aware of the prior radiological operations. This resulted in radiologically contaminated rags being treated as sanitary trash for eventual transport offsite and disposal. The error was discovered and due to swift actions by involved personnel, the contaminated waste was retrieved and properly dispositioned.
