On July 11, 2014, at the Department of Energy (DOE) Hanford Waste Treatment Plant (WTP) project, a subcontractor employee operating a Genie Z-135/70 boom lift experienced an unexpected event as he was maneuvering the lift into position to perform work approximately 40 feet above the ground.
As he was raising the platform to elevation, the self leveling platform began to move past level in a downward position. When the employee attempted to level the platform using the platform level controls the platform tilted further downward. The employee stopped all lift movement and called his supervisor for help.
The subcontractor supervisor, and the Bechtel National Inc. (BNI) area superintendent, and the BNI safety representative arrived at the event location, assessed the situation, and directed personnel to retrieve the employee using a second aerial lift. The employee was safely retrieved a short time later.
