On December 17th Mission Support Alliance (MSA) issued a Stop Work for the use of Frost Fighter Model IDF500 diesel heaters used in combination with Allegro flexible duct hose with a less than adequate temperature rating. Work was stopped until the duct hose was replaced with duct hose meeting the required temperature rating. Use of the heater with inadequately rated duct hose could lead to fire or other safety issues.

Important Points:
  • The Allegro ducting is yellow with a black weather strip. The duct meets ASTM 227 specs and has a temperature resistance up to 180F.

  • The max duct temperature listed on the Model IDF500 space heater name plate and caution sticker is 290 degrees F.

  • Flexible ducting must meet required temperature rating as called out on the heating unit.

Contributors: The rental equipment company provided flexible duct hose that was not rated for use with Model IDF500 heater.

Recommendations to prevent recurrence:
  • Include a requirement in equipment rental agreements that all auxiliary parts meet manufactures requirements.
  • Thoroughly inspect all rental equipment prior to use.
